Schizophrenia Treatment

Learn about schizophrenia treatment at Shaker Clinic in Cleveland, OH

When a person is experiencing delusions, hallucinations, and other psychotic symptoms, he or she may be suffering from schizophrenia. A serious mental health condition that can inflict a great deal of disruption on a person’s life, schizophrenia can cause a person to have disorganized thought processes, illogical speech, catatonia, and memory impairments. Individuals with this disorder also frequently have a hard time securing employment and have more interaction with law enforcement because of their hindered ability to determine what is real and what is not. Those that do not seek treatment for this condition often wind up battling addiction to substances and contemplate suicide due to the distressing symptoms of this mental illness. However, it is important to note that there is care available for those with schizophrenia and a number of effective options for treatment that can reduce unpleasant symptoms and restore healthy functioning.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for schizophrenia

Those that are struggling with schizophrenia often isolate themselves from friends and loved ones when their symptoms become too difficult to manage or if their symptoms prevent them from interacting with the outside world. When this occurs, it can be difficult for those in the individual’s life to identify the presence of this mental health condition. However, when around your friend or loved one, it is important to take note of the presence of any of the following signs that would infer that he or she is struggling with symptoms synonymous with schizophrenia:

  • Lack of facial expressions
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Extreme paranoia
  • Poor hygiene
  • Loss of speech
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Cyclical thought processes
  • Presence of delusions and/or hallucinations

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important that you and your loved one consult with a mental health professional to discuss treatment options. Once engaged in treatment, it is also important that you remain an ongoing source of support and encouragement.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for schizophrenia at Shaker Clinic in Cleveland, OH

The combination of medication management and psychotherapy can be life-saving for a person battling schizophrenia. Outpatient treatment, the setting in which this combination can be found and accessed by people, involves qualified mental health professionals that can administer such care and improve the lives of sufferers of this condition. In an outpatient setting, therapists and case managers can help those with schizophrenia identify symptoms that are the most distressing and recommend methods for healthy coping. Additionally, these professionals can help sufferers decipher between what is real and what is symptomatic of this illness. Moreover, psychiatrists are often on hand in outpatient care and can prescribe monitor, and change medications that are known to significantly reduce the severity of symptoms present. Lastly, by engaging in outpatient care, individuals with schizophrenia can have access to additional resources in their community through referrals that can help improve their overall quality of life and foster a true sense of communal support.

The staff at Shaker Clinic strives to provide top-of-the-line, quality outpatient and in-home mental health services that are tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual that we treat. We recognize that each patient that we see has unique needs that must be explored and will be addressed throughout the development of one’s individualized service plan (ISP). The ISP is a written agreement between Shaker’s treatment center and the patient that describes, in detail, all of the services that will be provided. The implementation of the ISP allows for a collaborative process to occur between the patient and provider through the involvement of monitoring and evaluating goals, objectives, and interventions, while also showing the progress of treatment as issues are identified and treated. Additionally, the ISP assures continual communication between the patient and provider, while also encouraging each patient to take personal responsibility for obtaining his or her own treatment goals.

In order to provide the most comprehensive care available, Shaker Clinic offers the following services:

Mental health evaluation: In order to ensure that each and every need is addressed and met, a thorough clinical evaluation is provided for each patient in order to assess the individual’s needs, concerns, and present level of functioning. Based on the results of this evaluation, the appropriate services and treatment recommendations will be determined and presented to the patient. The recommendations will be based on the identification of the presenting problem, the evaluation of one’s mental status, and the formulation of a diagnostic impression.

Medication management: As part of our goal to guarantee the improved functioning of our patients, as well as to ensure the successful, consistent management and reduction of symptoms, we provide ongoing medication management to all patients who need it. This service provides psychiatric and medical interventions that are implemented in order to reduce, stabilize, and/or eliminate the symptoms that patients are plagued by as a result of their psychiatric struggles.

Behavioral health counseling and therapy: This component of treatment focuses on directly addressing the patient’s mental illness or emotional disturbance. These sessions primarily occur one-on-one between a patient and therapist, however, family members or guardians may be included when specified as part of the patient’s individualized service plan. These counseling services consist of a series of time-limited, structured sessions that work towards the attainment of mutually defined goals.

Case Management: The intent of case management is to provide specific, measurable, and individualized services to each patient. In order to do so, we focus specifically on our patients’ abilities to succeed in the community by assisting individuals in identifying and accessing needed services, guiding them as they show improvement in work functioning and family relationships, and aiding them as they integrate back into the community and become contributing members of society.
