How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for adjustment disorder

If you have a family member or loved one who is suffering from adjustment disorder, you may be feeling heartbroken as you watch him or her deal with such overwhelming feelings of distress on a daily basis. While you want to help your loved one, you may feel unsure as to what you can do for him or her. The following are some tips to keep in mind that can assist you in being a solid source of support for your loved one:

  • Learn about adjustment disorder and its symptoms; having an understanding of this illness can provide you with the empathy you need when dealing with your loved one
  • Research various treatment options that may be of the most benefit to your loved one
  • Encourage your loved one to talk about what he or she is feeling; do not pressure him or her to talk about things that may lead to further feelings of distress, but just let him or her know that you are there to listen
  • Refrain from being judgmental; you may not understand why your loved one is reacting the way that he or she is, but remember that everyone reacts to stress in different ways
  • Offer to go with your loved one to any appointments that are made while exploring treatment options
  • Offer your unconditional, unwavering support throughout the entire therapeutic process; knowing that you are there will help promote a more successful recovery

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for adjustment disorder at Shaker Clinic in Cleveland, OH

Suffering from adjustment disorder not only affects an individual’s ability to function appropriately each day, but it also negatively impacts how he or she feels about him or herself. Not being able to cope with the distress that these people feel can lead to decreased feelings of self-worth and a loss of self-control. However, by receiving appropriate therapeutic interventions, individuals with adjustment disorder can regain that sense of control and rebuild their sense of self-worth.

Outpatient treatment centers can be a beneficial source of support for individuals who are struggling with the symptoms of adjustment disorder. By participating in therapy in an outpatient setting, or in the comfort of one’s own home, sufferers of this illness can become educated about this disease, develop coping skills to manage their distress, and discover tools that can help them repair their ability to function appropriately on a daily basis.

Types of Treatment

The staff at Shaker Clinic strives to provide top-of-the-line, quality outpatient and in-home mental health services that are tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual that we treat. We recognize that each patient that we see has unique needs that must be explored and will be addressed throughout the development of one’s individualized service plan (ISP). The ISP is a written agreement between Shaker’s treatment center and the patient that describes, in detail, all of the services that will be provided. The implementation of the ISP allows for a collaborative process to occur between the patient and provider through the involvement of monitoring and evaluating goals, objectives, and interventions, while also showing the progress of treatment as issues are identified and treated. Additionally, the ISP assures continual communication between the patient and provider, while also encouraging each patient to take personal responsibility for obtaining his or her own treatment goals.

In order to provide the most comprehensive care available, Shaker Clinic offers the following services:

Mental health evaluation: In order to ensure that each and every need is addressed and met, a thorough clinical evaluation is provided for each patient in order to assess the individual’s needs, concerns, and present level of functioning. Based on the results of this evaluation, the appropriate services and treatment recommendations will be determined and presented to the patient. The recommendations will be based on the identification of the presenting problem, the evaluation of one’s mental status, and the formulation of a diagnostic impression.

Medication management: As part of our goal to guarantee the improved functioning of our patients, as well as to ensure the successful, consistent management and reduction of symptoms, we provide ongoing medication management to all patients who need it. This service provides psychiatric and medical interventions that are implemented in order to reduce, stabilize, and/or eliminate the symptoms that patients are plagued by as a result of their psychiatric struggles.

Behavioral health counseling and therapy: This component of treatment focuses on directly addressing the patient’s mental illness or emotional disturbance. These sessions primarily occur one-on-one between a patient and therapist, however, family members or guardians may be included when specified as part of the patient’s individualized service plan. These counseling services consist of a series of time-limited, structured sessions that work towards the attainment of mutually defined goals.

Case Management: The intent of case management is to provide specific, measurable, and individualized services to each patient. In order to do so, we focus specifically on our patients’ abilities to succeed in the community by assisting individuals in identifying and accessing needed services, guiding them as they show improvement in work functioning and family relationships, and aiding them as they integrate back into the community and become contributing members of society.
